Patchington- How to Dress if you are a Triangle Shape

Last week we touched on how challenging it can be to dress for your body type – if you even know what shape your body is. This week we’ll discuss two very common, very opposite body shapes: triangle and inverted triangle.

If you’re a triangle, your body is larger below the waist. That is, you have a shapely bottom with a tinier waist. A triangle is a classic feminine shape. A few celebrity examples of triangles are actress Jennifer Aniston and singer Jennifer Lopez. As a triangle, your shapely legs, trim waist and head-turning hips give you feminine appeal.
Although you instinctively might want to dress your slender upper body in slim-fitting shirts, style experts recommend resisting such an urge. Tiny tops can throw off your body’s balance, and your bottom half will actually look bigger than it is.

  • Think layers! This will create a balance for your shape and fill out your upper half
  • Cardigans and cropped jackets that stop at the waist are your BFFs. They add lightweight volume.
  • Show some skin! ¾ sleeve tees, wide scoop necks and one shoulder tops will look amazing on you!

  • Boot cut pants are the best! The slight flare on a boot cut pant or jean helps balance out your curves. (For the ultimate effect, wear with a heel.)
  • Dark, medium-rise jeans with simple stitching and pockets will slim your bottom half.
  • Skirts and dresses are most flattering in a classic A-line. Avoid high-waisted anythings and pleated skirts.

Fabrics and colors a Triangle should wear:

  •  Draw the eye up with bright colors and embellished top
  •  Boatneck shirts and horizontal stripes look great on you!
  •  Accessorize with chunky jewelry
  •  For prints and patterns, aim for darker colors on bottom.
